Loja Ecuador is a popular small city nestled in the Andes Mountains in Southern Ecuador. The people are very friendly and the city is very clean. You’ll notice a blend of colonial, art deco and 60s utilitarian architecture, lots of murals and churches. It’s growing in popularity with expats, but it’s still relatively undiscovered by foreigners.

Ecuador’s NEW Digital Nomad Visa (Rules & Requirements)

We’re happy to introduce you to Maite and her team at Gringo Visas. Tell us more about your situation here and we’ll send an immediate introduction email.

In March 2022, Ecuador announced changes to its Rentista Visa, which effectively makes it a Digital Nomad Visa. If you have online income from abroad, you may qualify for this Ecuador temporary residency visa.

If you are a digital nomad or work remotely for a company abroad or as a freelancer, you need to show an income of $1,275/month + $250/month/dependent, or a yearly income of $15,300 + $3,000/year/dependent. These amounts are based on bank statements for the previous 3 to 12 months.

Additionally, you need to prove you work for a real corporation or LLC by providing the legal business documents. If you are a freelancer, you need to have your own legal LLC.

You may also need proof of your work contract or employment that states you will continue to earn an income for at least 2 years after you move to Ecuador.

You’ll also need to provide an FBI background check, a state police report, a marriage license for a dependent spouse, and birth certificates for dependent children.

You also need to provide proof of health insurance either from a private Ecuadorian insurance company, or from an international plan that specifically states you will be covered in Ecuador.

All of these documents must be less than 6 months old and they need to have an apostille (except the bank statements). If you’re from Canada, the documents need to be legalized by the Ecuadorian consulate. Then they need to be translated into Spanish by a certified Ecuadorian translator and notarized by an Ecuadorian notary.

FAQ #101 – What Are the DRIEST BEACHES In Ecuador?

This may sound like an oxymoron, but there are some beaches in Ecuador that are dryer than others, at least in terms of humidity.

Playas, Salinas and the beaches near Manta including Santa Marianita and San Lorenzo are located in desert microclimates, which means they have more dirt and cactus than humidity.

However, they are still ocean beaches, which means there is moisture coming off the water in the form of mist and humidity. While the air does feel drier than beaches in jungle microclimates like Olón and Montañita, it is still humid compared to inland deserts and higher elevation mountain towns like Cotacachi and Vilcabamba.

FAQ #100 – What About SAND FLEAS In Ecuador?

Sand Fleas or No-see-ums are a seasonal issue on most beaches in Ecuador. They are tiny invisible bugs that bite and leave itchy blisters, mostly on your feet, ankles and lower legs.

An easy prevention is to apply an alcohol based bug repellent that is sold in most tiendas along the coast. Look for the white bottle with green print. We just rubbed it all over our feet and lower legs before our long walks on the beach and that prevented them from biting us.

We were usually caught off guard when the sand flea season began so a little benadryl cream helped with the itching.
