We’ve lived in and visited several places in Ecuador over the past several years so we’re very familiar with the different dialects and words spoken here compared to other Spanish speaking countries.
We studied Mexican Spanish in school and with language apps like Duolingo and Fluenz; however, Ecuadorians have their own version of the language, which made it more difficult for us to communicate.
For example, Ecuadorians don’t use “adios” when they say “goodbye” unless you’re going a long distance or you’ll be gone for a long time. Instead, they say “chao,” which more accurately translates to “bye for now.” Notice also that the spelling is different from the Italian “ciao.” This is just one of countless examples of how even basic Spanish is used differently in Ecuador.
