In addition to the covid vaccine, the CDC has a long list of other recommended vaccines that are needed to visit Ecuador. The list includes Chickenpox (Varicella), Diphtheria-Tetanus-Pertussis, Flu (influenza), Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR), Polio, Hepatitis A & B, Malaria, Rabies, Typhoid and Yellow Fever.
We didn’t get any vaccines to visit Quito and Cuenca for our exploratory trip or when we moved to Ecuador. However, we did get the Yellow Fever vaccine for our trip to India, which was required because we live in Ecuador. We may also get the Malaria and Typhoid vaccines prior to visiting the Amazon jungle since both are an issue, especially in that area.
Whether you get all of the CDC recommended vaccines, some, or none, is up to you. Malaria, Yellow Fever and Typhoid are an issue in the Amazon and the wetter coastal areas, as is Hemorrhagic Dengue Fever, which doesn’t have a vaccine.
Vaccines are not required by law in Ecuador. The Ecuadorian constitution states that healthcare is a human right, as is the right to refuse it.
